Wine Tasting: The Library

I apologize for my absence blogosphere! I recently moved into the city and it’s been a crazy past couple of weeks. Our new apartment is beautiful and so much closer to my job. I went to a wine tasting at a coffee shop called The Library (about a mile from my apartment) last week. They have great food, drinks and, of course, wine. It was so much fun! They’re doing another one next month and I can’t wait to go back.

Dining: Trackside Grill

A friend was in town last weekend and we did a lot of fun things, including a trip to the World of Coke and attending the first Braves game after their 10.000th win. On Sunday we went to church and then out for brunch at Trackside Grill, one of my favorite restaurants in Kennesaw. I usually switch up what I order each time, but this time I was craving one of my favorite entrees, the Grown-Up Grilled Cheese, which is aged cheddar, swiss and provolone with applewood smoked bacon and tomato on buttered challah. It’s absolutely become one of those things I crave. Also, they recently opened up a rooftop patio, which I can’t wait to check out.

Cooking: Jalapeno Mac & Cheese

A few months ago I had jalapeno macaroni and cheese for the first time. Since I LOVE spicy food and cheese, it’s pretty surprising that it took so long for me to put two and two together. I decided to make some over the weekend to accompany our ribs for the 4th of July. I used this recipe and while it turned out pretty well, there are a few things I would have done differently. First, the recipe says to used canned jalapenos but I highly recommend fresh ones. They are spicier and have more flavor. Second, the recipe says to top it with a bread crumb and butter topping before baking. I did include that, but I felt like the mac and cheese really didn’t need it. All in all, this is a great twist on an original that I recommend adapting to make your own!

Wearing: Red, White & Blue

I had a great Fourth of July weekend! I spent lots of time relaxing, cooking (post to come!) and shopping for my new apartment. There’s definitely a wrong way and a right way to show your American pride by wearing red, white and blue. By focusing on one color and keeping the other two at a minimum, you can easily be both festive and stylish.

I hope everyone had a safe and happy Fourth of July!

Dining: Tin Lizzy’s

If I had to choose a favorite type of food, hands down it would be mexican. Queso, jalapenos, margaritas? Yes, please! Shortly after moving to Atlanta my friend Rae directed me to Tin Lizzy’s in Buckhead (there’s also one in Grant Park and Midtown). It’s literally a shack that’s barely visable from the road. It is some of the best mexican food I’ve ever had. My college roommate Sam and I went last night and it was amazing, as always. My favorite tacos are the Santa Fe Steak (grilled steak, jalapenos, onions, tomatoes and cilantro drizzled with queso blano and spicy ranch) and the Southeast Chicken Club (fried chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, monterey jack cheese and chipotle mayo).

Cooking: Chocolate Dipped Macaroons

I wanted to bake something tonight but I didn’t have any butter so the usual cookies were a no go. I remembered that I bought a mix a few months ago called Canterbury Naturals Coconut Macaroons that just required water. I decided to make them following the box and then dip them in almond bark (also known as baker’s chocolate). My only complaint is that the cookies can burn a bit on the bottom and if you use a scoop, keep their super round shape which isn’t ideal for dipping. After about 12 minutes, I pulled them from the oven, used a spatula to lift them up and then using the back of a spoon that had cooking spray on it, I flattened them down a bit. I then put them back in the oven for about 2 minutes. The end result was simply amazing. I can’t wait to try to make them from scratch in the future!

Wearing: Green shorts

I think one of the things people struggle with in terms of fashion is how to make a otherwise plain clothes a more fun outfit. The answer is simple—accessories. Even though a black t-shirt and green shorts might not be that exciting, it allows for your accessories to do the talking. In this case, it was actually my shoes that were the focal point of the outfit.

I bought these from Target a few weeks ago and I’m pretty much obsessed with them. They dress any outfit up and are such a fun alternative to flip flops. Also, they look expensive, even though they weren’t, which is always a plus. At only $30, I’ll definitely get my money’s worth. I complimented the shoes with a black and gold necklace. It was a great outfit for a Sunday of running errands.
